What Is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is the idea that differences in how our brains work are natural and valuable, not deficits to be fixed.

What Is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is the concept that human brains naturally vary in how they are wired, and that this variation is a normal, and valuable, part of human diversity. Conditions such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and dyscalculia are part of this spectrum.

Rather than viewing these as "disorders" that need to be cured, the neurodiversity movement recognises that different brain types come with different strengths and challenges. Many people with ADHD, for example, show exceptional creativity, hyperfocus on areas of interest, and an ability to think outside the box.

Why Does It Matter?

For too long, neurodivergent individuals have been told they are "not trying hard enough" or that they need to fit a mould designed for neurotypical brains. This can have a profound impact on self esteem, relationships, and career.

Understanding neurodiversity helps us build environments, in schools, workplaces, and clinics, that work with people rather than against them.
