There are more contraceptive options than ever before. We break down the main choices to help you make an informed decision.
Understanding Contraception: Your Options Explained
Choosing the right contraception is a very personal decision, and there is no one size fits all answer. Our aim is to give you accurate, judgement-free information so you can make the choice that works best for your body, your health, and your life.
Short-Acting Methods
Combined pill: contains oestrogen and progesterone. Highly effective when taken correctly. Not suitable for everyone (e.g. migraines with aura, certain clotting risks).
Progestogen-only pill (mini pill): suitable for more people, including those who can't take oestrogen.
Patch & ring: combined hormonal methods that some people find easier to use consistently than a daily pill.
Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)
These are often the most effective options as they don't rely on remembering a daily pill:
- Implant: a small rod under the skin of your upper arm; lasts 3 years
- Hormonal coil (Mirena/Kyleena): lasts 5 to 8 years; often reduces or stops periods
- Copper coil (IUD): hormone free; lasts up to 10 years; can also be used as emergency contraception
Emergency Contraception
We can advise on and prescribe emergency contraception, including the morning-after pill and copper coil insertion.
