Understanding the ADHD Diagnostic Process
What actually happens during an ADHD assessment? We walk you through what to expect, step by step.
Understanding the ADHD Diagnostic Process
If you think you might have ADHD, the idea of getting assessed can feel daunting. Will they think I'm making it up? What if I don't "look like" someone with ADHD? These are incredibly common worries, and we want to put your mind at rest.
What Does an Assessment Involve?
An ADHD assessment is a structured clinical interview. There is no blood test or brain scan, diagnosis is based on a detailed conversation about your life, your history, and the challenges you face day to day.
At BGM Medical, our assessments have no fixed time limit. We take as long as we need to get it right.
What we'll explore:
- Your current symptoms and how they affect your daily life
- When symptoms started (ADHD is present from childhood, though it may only become problematic later in life)
- Your medical, educational, and personal history
- Any other conditions that might explain your symptoms
We May Ask for Collateral Information
Sometimes it helps to speak to a family member, partner, or close friend who knew you as a child, particularly if you're being assessed as an adult. This is optional, and we'll discuss it with you.
After the Assessment
If a diagnosis is made, we will provide you with a formal letter confirming this, a letter for your GP, and a discussion about management options. These are all included in the assessment fee.
What If I Don't Get a Diagnosis?
A negative assessment isn't a failure, it means we look at what else might be going on and help you find the right support.
